Dancing With the Demon

I look behind me and I see
that I am not alone.
For standing in my shadow
is a demon of my own.
I move my feet, I do the dance
that takes me far away.
And once again my destiny
is tempted not to stay.
I live the life and smile the smiles
that all expect to see.
For if I get the hang of it,
life's partner I will be.
I run in place to leave the dreams
that will not let me sleep.
And dance the dance of memories
that scar my soul so deep.
I try to hide from that dark past
that haunts me as I wake,
For if I run quite fast enough,
the past I will forsake.
I have no choice but to dance
the dance life gives to me.
And should I dare to raise my eyes,
I'm dancing with the demon I will see.
